method to Gary’s madness in those changes

After scoring just 39 points all last year, the Patriots are hoping a little extra experience at key areas will help the offense be more productive in 2018.

That task begins with keeping goals fairly simple.

“Since we’re still trying to build the program,” said Willie Gary, who takes over as head coach after serving as an assistant under former coach Kenan Dever the past three years. “Our goal is more than just scoring. It’s to get first downs. If you get first downs, you’ll eventually start scoring.”

Being a little more battle tested should help senior quarterback Donte Henry, who got plenty of on the job training after taking over the starting job midway through last year, and hopes the lessons he learned pays dividends this fall.

He will benefit from the return of junior running back Johnathan Wiley pictured , who is healthy after battling through injuries last year, as well as a trio of receivers in juniors Desmond James and Nick Martin and senior Diontae Evans, who will be asked to fill a far greater role with the loss of last year’s leading receiver Malcolm Mitchell Jersey, Xzavier Ward.

The Patriots also had to rebuild their line, with senior Fernando Contreras and junior Raquan Strowbridge as the only returning starters.

DEFENSE

The Patriots allowed the most points 571 and most average points per game 57.1 in the state last season.

That wasn’t all the defense’s fault, with turnovers by the offense contributing to it being forced to stay on the field too long at times.

Still, there is plenty of room for improvement https://www.patriotsnefans.com/jason-th … -c-82.html, though like the offense, the defense hopes to do that behind a good core of returning starters.

The caveat is that a number of those starters will be in different spots on the field — most notably, seniors Anthony Ferrell and Alvin Duncan, who moved up from linebacker to the defensive line, and fellow senior Hank Chambers shifting from a rover position to man one of the corners.

There is method to Gary’s madness in those changes.

“We’re trying to emphasize to play fast,” Gary said. “We’re working on pursuit to the ball every day in drills and tackles every day in drills. … We’re moving guys around to use their speed. We’ll see if they respond. They’re learning, so we’ll see what happens.”

ETC.

As much everyone else around the Berkmar program would like to, it’s impossible to ignore the program’s current 47 game losing streak dating back to Sept. 20, 2013, which is the longest active streak in Georgia.

However https://www.patriotsnefans.com/brandon- … -c-81.html, Gary and the school’s administration are hoping to give the Patriots a fighting chance to break that streak early this fall.

Already saddled with playing year after year in a region made up primarily of powerful county opponents, Berkmar is attempting to follow the model neighborhood rival Meadowcreek established and play a more manageable schedule prior to their traditionally tough Region 7 AAAAAAA slate.

The Patriots’ four non region opponents went a combined 5 31 last season https://www.patriotsnefans.com/josh-aug … -c-83.html, compared to the 20 23 mark put in by their four non region foes last season, which included two state playoff teams.

This year’s docket includes the Aug. 24 season opener at home against Cross Keys, a team that went winless in a season that included only six games and which has won more than one game in a season only three times since 1996.

Gary emphasizes that patience will be a key as they try to end the long losing streak and build some confidence for this year, and hopefully beyond.

“The thing is, no matter who we’re playing, nobody is a guarantee,” Gary said. “We are going to play some athletic teams. But yeah, we’re trying to follow the Meadowcreek model to the give kids confidence. We don’t want to take a beating every week. If we can win two of the four non region games, maybe we can infuse some confidence and play harder and be a little more competitive in region games. We’re just trying to compete. That will be the key.
